A smaller appetite does not mean your body needs less nutrition as you get older.

Medications, illness, stress, dental problems and changes in taste can all make eating harder, while too little food can affect your strength and energy.

Instead of forcing down large meals, try smaller meals and snacks throughout the day, choosing nutrient-rich foods such as eggs, Greek yogurt, beans, fish, nuts and avocado.

Include protein early in a meal if you tend to get full quickly, and consider softer options like scrambled eggs, soup or smoothies when chewing or preparation feels difficult.

Olive oil, peanut butter or cheese can add energy without making portions much bigger.

If drinks fill you up before meals, try having more fluids between them instead.

Talk with a doctor or registered dietitian if you are losing weight without trying, feeling weaker or struggling to eat enough.
