Five Easy High-Protein Breakfasts for Older Adults |
And how to try them out today! |

If you're over 60, one of the most important things you can put on your breakfast plate isn't a special vitamin, supplement, or "superfood."
It's protein.
As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important for staying strong, keeping our balance, getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, supporting our metabolism, and maintaining independence. The problem is that many traditional breakfasts toast, cereal, muffins, or oatmeal by itself don't contain much protein. Research also suggests older adults may benefit from consuming more protein than the basic minimum recommendation. The PROT-AGE Study Group recommends roughly 1.0–1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for healthy older adults, with individual needs varying based on health and activity. So instead of trying to get most of your protein at dinner, breakfast is a great place to start. 1. Greek Yogurt + BerriesTry:
Protein: approximately 20–25 grams No cooking required. Greek yogurt also provides calcium, while berries add fiber and other important nutrients. Easy upgrade: If you normally eat fruit for breakfast, don't eliminate the fruit. Simply add Greek yogurt.
2. Eggs + Cottage CheeseTwo eggs provide around 12 grams of protein. That's a good start, but adding cottage cheese makes the meal much more substantial.
Try:
Protein: approximately 25–35 grams You can even mix cottage cheese directly into scrambled eggs if you don't enjoy eating it by itself.
3. Protein OatmealOatmeal can be a great breakfast, but oatmeal alone isn't particularly high in protein. Try adding:
Protein: approximately 20–30 grams This is something I teach clients all the time: you don't always need to completely change what you're eating. Sometimes you simply need to improve it.
4. Easy Breakfast SandwichBread isn't the enemy. Build a simple sandwich with:
Protein: approximately 25–30 grams Add some fruit on the side and you've got a filling breakfast that only takes a few minutes to prepare.
5. The "I Don't Feel Like Cooking" ShakeNot hungry in the morning? Don't want to cook? Try:
Protein: approximately 25–35+ grams
It's fast, easy to drink, and can be especially helpful for people who struggle to eat much first thing in the morning. What Does the Research Say?
Researchers following 1,746 adults in the Framingham Offspring Study found that higher protein intake was associated with better preservation of grip strength over six years, particularly among adults age 60 and older.
You can read the study yourself here: Protein Intake and Grip Strength — PubMed
Another Framingham study followed adults for approximately 12 years. People eating at least 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day were 41% less likely to become dependent in one or more physical tasks compared with those eating less than 0.8 grams per kilogram per day.
Those tasks included walking half a mile, climbing stairs, kneeling, lifting heavier objects, and doing work around the house.
You can read that study here: Protein and Preservation of Physical Function — PubMed
The PROT-AGE Study Group also reviewed the available research and recommended an average intake of around 1.0–1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for healthy adults over 65.
You can read their recommendations here: PROT-AGE Protein Recommendations — PubMed Remember, these studies don't mean protein alone prevents aging or physical decline. Staying strong after 60 is still about the bigger picture: adequate nutrition, strength training, walking and regular activity, sleep, and staying consistent.
Start With One Question
Tomorrow morning, look at your breakfast and ask: "Where's my protein?" Eating oatmeal? Add protein. Eating toast? Add eggs. Eating fruit? Add Greek yogurt. Not hungry? Try a shake. You don't need to completely overhaul your diet. Small improvements repeated consistently are what move the needle. Because the goal isn't simply to live longer. It's to stay strong enough to enjoy those extra years.
